Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s vice president, was accompanied by Mustapha Ussif, the minister of sports, and other dignitaries on a tour of the venues for the 13th African Games.
During the launch, the Vice President visited the University of Ghana and the Borteyman Sports Complex to inspect the ongoing construction.
The Games, which were supposed to take place in August 2023, were moved to March 2024 because of infrastructure delivery delays.
Since the announcement of the revised dates, though, there have been updates, with both venues’ construction almost finished.
Dr. Bawumia stated during the University of Ghana’s 100-day countdown launch that the African Games will provide a platform for future facility investments.
“Our government sees the development, promotion and organisation of sports especially the African Games as an event for the future,” he said.
“The construction of modern sports facilities for the African Games is therefore a deliberate effort towards providing additional infrastructure to propel sports for development.”
After touring the facilities, Mustapha Ussif, the minister of sports, was persuaded that the nation was now prepared to welcome the rest of Africa in 2024.
“We are fully prepared to host the entire African continent here in March 2024,” he noted.
“We have visited the biggest aquatic centre which is the biggest in Africa. We are also developing a multipurpose hall that will be used for basketball, handball and other indoor games which is 1,000-seater with VIP.”
During the course of the 16-day event, over 3,500 male and female competitors as well as officials from 55 African nations are anticipated in Ghana to compete in 23 sporting disciplines.
