Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA), Mr David Kwadwo Amoateng says Ghana is a sovereign country and its leaders must begin to protect the interest of the citizens.
He is calling on the Ghanaian government to emulate the example of its Nigerian neighbours by also closing its borders.
This he believes will prevent smuggling of goods into the country.
According to him, the Nigerian borders which has been closed for over a week now should have been opened after Ghana’s Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and the Trade Ministers went to negotiate with the Nigerian authorities.
Mr Amoateng said the Nigerian Government does not have any respect for the Ghanaian government the reason why the borders remain closed.
“Ghana did not give birth to ECOWAS, if the Nigerians have the numbers, if they say they are our big brothers and they are treating us like this we should reciprocate it in equal measure” he said.
He called on Nigerian Government to stop bullying Ghanaians because Ghana can also survive without them.
He urged the government to implement the laws of the country under the GIPC Act 865 Sub section 27.
The act, in part, seeks to encourage and promote investments in Ghana, to provide for the creation of an attractive incentive framework and a transparent, predictable and facilitating environment for investments in Ghana.
Mr Amoateng said the implementation of this law will make Ghanaians proud of their leaders.
“GUTA is pleading with our President and all leaders of the country that they should implement our laws. What are the laws that I’m talking about, the GIPC Act 865 Sub section 27. Let them implement that law to the letter and let Ghanaians for once feel proud of our leaders” he said
Whilst congratulating President Buhari for being man enough to close the Nigerian borders, Mr Amoateng criticised Ghanaians for allowing Nigerian business men to bring their products into Ghana at a time when the Nigerian borders have been closed.
According to him, it seems the Nigerian Government opens the borders for its people and closes same to its neighbours who have goods to transport as well.
