Ghana Premier League new comers, Accra Lions played a 1-1 draw against Elmina Sharks in the opening fixture of the 2021/2022 GPL on Friday.
A goal from Accra Lions attacker Abdul Rauf in the 83rd minute canceled out Michelle Sarpong’s opener early on.
The home side were the much better side in the opening minutes of the game but wasted a lot of chances with their playmaker Rauf squandering a lot of chances.
Accra Lions were more comfortable on the ball as they controlled affairs in midfield area but lacked potency upfront with their marksman Frederick Asante being indecisive in front of goal.
The clearest chance of the half fell to Elmina Sharks attacker Enock Agblenyo on the stroke of halftime but Accra Lions goalkeeper Appiah Kubi produced a brilliant save to keep the match scoreless.
Elmina Sharks started the second half the better side and Agblenyo should have put the away side ahead but skied his effort wide on the hour mark.
On loan Hearts of Oak player Sarpong broke the deadlock for the away side in the 64th minute after a defensive blunder from goalkeeper Appiah Kubi as he gifted Sarpong an empty net which was difficult to miss.
The home side were poised to get the equalizer as they pressed the Elmina Sharks backline.
Accra Lion’s equalizer came in the 83rd minute when Abdul Rauf struck home for Accra Lions as they secured a point in their very first match of the Ghana Premier League.
