In response to the recent 5% excise tax on locally made plastic products, the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has announced preparations to protest on Wednesday, July 10.
Representing local industry participants, the Association sent a weekly request to the government on June 27 to seek an immediate suspension of the levy. Should their demands not be satisfied, they threatened to stop production for seven days in order to express their displeasure.
During a press conference, Association President Ebbo Botwe emphasized how urgent it is for the government to reevaluate its stance and urged fresh cooperation with all parties involved to avoid any possible economic consequences from the scheduled production stoppage.
This demonstration, however, was prompted by the government’s refusal to heed the Association’s demand.
The National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers, the Plastic Sellers Association of Ghana, and the GPMA jointly announced the protest in a statement dated Monday, July 1.
Over 400 people are anticipated to participate in the protest, which is scheduled to begin at Obra location at Circle, travel to Accra Technical University, and conclude at the Ministry of Finance.
In order to have their issues addressed, the Association is pleading with all of its members to participate in the demonstration.
