Since July 2023, the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat has been the subject of an investigation, as disclosed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The Scholarship Secretariat has been under public scrutiny due to recent reports, especially after an exposé published in the Fourth Estate.
The investigation has revealed cases in which scholarships were given to applicants from wealthy backgrounds, defying the Secretariat’s mandate to assist academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor has been asked by the Minority in Parliament to investigate the scholarship secretariat’s operations in light of these disclosures.
The National Democratic Congress’ deputy youth organizer, Osman Ayariga, then filed a request with the Office of the Special Prosecutor asking them to look into the Scholarship secretariat’s operations.
As per the OSP’s response to Osman Ayariga’s petition, the Secretariat is presently being investigated for possible corruption and offenses related to corruption. This was confirmed in a confidential letter.
“The office of the Special Prosecutor commenced into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat circa July 2023. The investigation is active and ongoing” the office stated.
