The Auditor General, Daniel Domelevo has said his office will review all awarded contracts and projects that have been abandoned over the last few years.
This follows the complaints by Former President, John Dramani Mahama and citizens about abandoned schools, hospitals and various projects over the past years.
The former President, during his tour to the Savannah Region this week raised concerns and disappointments about the number of schools and projects that have been abandoned since he left office.
According to him, he has observed that lot of projects that he started across the country and were due for completion had all been abandoned.
“During my rounds touring the country and communities, I have often drawn attention to the criminal abandonment of projects. And this is one example, I mean almost all complete full secondary schools, community basic school, fire extinguishers have been installed, I mean ready to go. This I remember is one of the World Bank funded project that we got. They were 23 of them,”
He said though the schools were at the door steps of the people, students have to travel several kilometers in order to get access to Secondary Education.
“The remaining number of 100 were funded through government resources. If you go around the country, you will find them at different levels of completion, some have almost been completed and yet they remained unoccupied.
Meanwhile the Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo, said a special audit of those abandoned projects will scrutinize the entire procurement chain..
Speaking on Accra based Joy FM he said “One of the areas that Ghanaians have not even turned their attention to, which beats my mind and understanding, is the fact that people buy just for the sake of buying not because they need it. They can buy vehicle and park it, they can build hospital and not use it, they can build a school and not use it. And I say what kind of country is this.
He said as a country we must wake up from this partisan behaviors.” This is not an offense which is to be looked at as a partisan issue. It is an offense against the nation and if it is your government or not your Government you must speak against it otherwise, we are never going to progress as a people.
He further assured that the Audit service is going to look at the abandoned projects.
The Board Chairman of the Internal Audit Board, Joseph B. Winful added that Internal Auditors must stop awarding contracts for projects that are not necessary.
“We shouldn’t wait, if I look at even the struggle of our Government and mobilizing resources and then we spend the same materials on new ones we are wasting money. Internal Audit will also have to include getting value for whatever we are investing in,” he said.
