A week after the Black Stars were ousted from the 2023 African Cup of Nations competition in Cote d’Ivoire, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has apologised to Ghanaians for the team’s group-stage exit.
Following defeats to Cape Verde in their first Group B match, Ghana was eliminated from the AFCON 2023 campaign with two points after drawing with Mozambique and Egypt.
The Black Stars’ poor campaign was acknowledged by the GFA in a statement on Tuesday, saying it “fell short of the high expectations we all share.”
“The Ghana Football Association extends our sincerest apologies to the good people of Ghana and all stakeholders for the recent disappointing performance of the senior national team, the Black Stars at the Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023,” the GFA stated.
“We understand the disappointment and frustration that such results can bring to our passionate football-loving nation.
“We take full responsibility for the disappointment” the press statement added.
Chris Hughton, the head coach of Ghana, was fired shortly after the country’s terrible and humiliating early withdrawal from the AFCON Tournament, and the Black Stars’ technical team was subsequently disbanded.
The GFA then made public the search for a new head coach, which is being chaired by Vice President Mark Addo and consisting of five members.
Following a meeting between the Association’s Executive Council and the Chairmen of the RFAs, the GFA also said that it was doing a comprehensive examination of the national team’s tactics, education, remuneration, and general organisation.
