John Mahama

Under the next NDC government, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has pledged that he is willing to grant Muslims in the nation an additional Eid holiday.

Because of the moon sighting, the former president voiced concerns that Muslims might not be able to fully enjoy their holidays.

During the 63rd Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission in Kumasi on Friday, the former president made this commitment.

The Public Holidays Act should be changed to better serve Muslims, Mr. Mahama stressed, adding that he would make sure this did not interfere with work output.

“We intend to address the situation where some of our Muslim brothers and sisters do not get to enjoy the public holiday at the end of Ramadan because of the 29 or 30-day rule based on sighting the moon,” Mr. Mahama gave assurance. As a result, we will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with an additional holiday. We plan to extend the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration by one day if elected to office, insha’Allah. And in order to avoid affecting productivity, we intend to accomplish this by amending the Public Holiday Act to ensure that Ghana keeps the same number of public holidays annually.
