In the Ashanti Region, seven head teachers of Senior High Schools (SHSs) have been asked to resign over allegations that they illegally collected fees from new students.

In separate statements dated December 8, 2023, the Ghana Education Service (GES) announced that it has opened investigations into the headteachers’ behavior.

The Kumasi Girls SHS headmaster, Mrs. Selina Anane Afoakwa, the Asanteman SHS headmaster, Mr. Andrews Boateng, the Kumasi Senior High Technical School headmaster, and Mr. Kwadwo Obeng-Appiah, the Manso-Edubia SHS headmaster, are the headteachers.

The remaining individuals are Mr. Ampong Ahmed Omar, headmaster of Collins SHS, Ms. Gladys Sarfowah, headmistress of Nkawie Senior High Technical School, and Mr. Daniel Boamah Duku, headmaster of Agric Nzema Community SHS.

The headteachers were accused by the GES of charging students a variety of unauthorized fees, such as house dues, books, and calculators.

It was also alleged that some others had collected fees for the printing of files, slips, and Hymm books, as well as for the admissions process.

This development comes after headteachers in the Eastern and Greater Accra regions were forcibly removed from their positions for selling items to students without authorization.

With this, the GES has now suspended 11 head teachers for collecting fees that were not authorized.
