In spite of the unexpected 1-0 victory over Comoros in Tuesday’s second Group I match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at the OmniSports Stadium in Moroni, Black Stars Head Coach Chris Hughton feels that Ghana was the superior team.

A goal from Myziane Maolida caused a major upset as The Black Stars lost 1-0 on the road against the Comoros. The Senior National team had bitter memories of the tiny country’s victory over them at AFCON 2021.

With three points, Ghana is currently positioned fourth in the standings, behind Madagascar, Mali, and Comoros, ahead of the upcoming June 2024 qualifying round.

This is Chris Hughton’s first defeat as the Black Stars’ head coach in a competitive match; his two previous defeats came in October friendlies against Mexico and the United States of America.

The former Newcastle manager laments his team’s lack of attacking ability against Comoros, which led to their embarrassing defeat.

”We will play Comoros again, but first of all, congratulations to Comoros for the victory.

In my opinion, over the 90 minutes, we were the better team; we conceded what we regard as a poor goal to concede.

We were not able to capitalize on the chances that we had; this was not in the game. The Comoros by far in this game were comfortable,” the gaffer said in a post-match reaction.
