The National Peace Council has condemned the recent vilification of Nigerians in some parts of the country describing it as uncalled for.
A member of the Council, Reverend Dr. Nii Amoo Darko said the actions by those Ghanaians could jeopardize the long-standing relationship that exist between the two countries.
He spoke to the Media on the sidelines of a sub-regional experience sharing workshop on Building and Sustaining National Dialogue and Peace Structures organized by the Commonwealth and the Peace Council.
“This ‘brawl’ that is going on between Ghanaians and Nigerians in our country is uncalled for. Because you see….it is important for us to acknowledge that we are a family in this sub region; especially when it comes to Ghana and Nigeria”
He said the two countries are like brothers and therefore must hold on to the long-standing relationship that exist between them no matter the fracas.
He added that though there might be some odd ones among the Nigerians who find their way into the country for criminal activities, Ghanaians must leave the criminal issues in the hands of the security agency to handle.
“Obviously there may be some criminals among them who might have found themselves in the country……and may be causing some act of criminality. Now let’s leave that to the security agency to deal with”
“If we get to find out that some body is behaving in a manner that is unpleasant, the obvious thing is to report such persons to the security agencies for them to deal with,” he said.
Rev Darko cautioned Ghanaians to desist from taking the laws into their own hands criminal issues arises.
“We shouldn’t take the laws into our own hands and then close down their shops, attack, and stone them,” he cautioned.
He said Ghanaians must think of the welfare of their friends and family in Nigeria before acting on some of the criminal issues associated with them.
“We need to remember that we also have some Ghanaians living in Nigeria and this kind of thing can backfire. And when that happens? What will become of our brethren there?” he questioned.
He further called on all Ghanaians to do things decently as Ghanaians.
“We’ve been known to be very civilized, we’ve been known to be hospitable, wave been known to be very accommodating …let us continue on that trend,” he said.
