The Executive Director of the African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Mr Ben Boakye has asked the government to suspend some petroleum taxes even if it cannot remove them totally.

This, in his view, will cushion Ghanaians in dealing with the effect of the rising fuel prices.

“If not to erase some of the taxes you can suspend some taxes to cushion us,” he said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday.

He added “The managers of the economy have to intervene. It may not be enough to bring significant relief but that gesture could help.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has said they intend to increase transport fares by 15 per cent.

The Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU Alhaji Abass Imoro who said this on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday,  said they are waiting to reach an agreement with the Ministry of Transport before announcing the increment.

“We are looking at increasing the transport fares by 15 percent,” he said.

He added ” We are waiting on the transport ministry so that we reach a consensus.”

Transport operators have been complaining about the rising cost of fuel in the country.

The GPRTU said the high fuel prices are affecting their businesses hence the decision to review transport fares upward.
