A raging storm hit parts of the Greater Accra Region in the early hours of Friday morning.

Some residents of Ashongman Estates in the Ga East District, who experienced it at about 0420 hours heard strong howling winds pounding their closed doors and windows at sustained intervals amidst light rains.

This, however, gave way to heavy rains just before 0500 hours, but subsided into lighter rains some minutes later.

“This is definitely a climate change experience and we pray nobody will be in harm’s way,” commented a resident.

Residents at Malejor, Awoshie, Odorkor, Weija, Tema, Achimota, Nungua and Kwabenya have also reported rains, characterised by thunder and lightning, but at varying levels of intensity.

Mrs Lydia Asamoah of Awoshie said the heavy rain was a welcome relief as they were able to collect some water to relieve them of the water shortage they have been experiencing over the past four days.

For Ms Gifty Amofa, the stormy and lightning experience was scary.

However, some residents overcame their fright to collect some water to complement the expensive one they had to purchase from independent water producers.

“It’s past 0700 hours but it’s still raining heavily here,” she stated.

Some parts of Accra are battling water shortage, as the Ghana Water Company works to fix some technical challenges.

Meteorologists at a media conference in Accra, a couple of days ago, warned of heavier rains over last year’s record for the Southern part of the country.

Accra is hosting Africa’s Climate Change Conference with a call from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who opened it, to citizens to take preventive, mitigative and adaptative measures more seriously.
