Former President John Dramani Mahama has told President Nana Akufo-Addo that he will have no control over the will of the people in the 2024 election.
He said if the people choose a new leader other than a leader of the New Patitoc Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, he Mr Akufo-Addo will have no option but to hand over power to that person.
Mr Mahama said these after taking a swipe at the Director of Operations at the Presidency Lord Oblitey Commey following his claim that they will want to hand over power to an NPP administration after the 2924 elections.
Mr Mahama described such comments as reckless comments that were made with Prescient Akufo-Addo’s backing.
Lord Commey had said at the Greater Accra Regional Delegates Conference of the NPP on Friday that “I don’t care who becomes national chairman, I don’t care who becomes flagbearer, what I care is that the NPP continues to reign in this country.”
He added “Breaking the 8, it’s become a slogan. I don’t have any 8 to break. I am continuing; tell your friend, we are continuing…you are just scaring yourself as if there is something to break.”
It is recalled that Vice President Dr Mahamudu also said President Akufo-Addo is determined to hand over power to another government of the NPP in the 2024 elections.
He described that desire of Mr Akufo-Addo as absolute hence, the president is working tirelessly to ensure his government succeeds over the next four years.
Speaking at a TESCON conference in Cape on Saturday, August 7, he said “Breaking the 8 is a political pursuit that requires us to gird our loins together, build a strong Party and deliver competently on our mandate.
“Thankfully, we are led by a commander-in-chief, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and in fact, he is the commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, whose passion and determination to hand over power to an NPP president in 2025 is absolute. That is why we see the president working tirelessly to make sure we succeed as a government and Party.
“We saw elections 2020 and the affirmative verdict of the Ghanaian people on our first term performance. It was a victory and endorsement of the competent work we did in our first term. We have begun our second term which is a build-up on what we did in the first term. As our 2020 manifesto indicated, this term will see to the consolidation of the many laudable initiatives we undertook in the first term, many of which have led to solutions that have never been seen since independence.”
But reacting to these comments, Mr Mahama said “I handed over you Nana Akufo-Addo. I could have made up my mind to hand over to an NDC but it is the will of the people. If the people decide you must agree.
“The point is, I don’t know where he is coming from but statements like this are reckless. I think when they made them the president is happy with them and he pats them on the back that encourages them.”
