Every year, the nominations for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) sparks controversy and this year’s has to do with the inclusion of Joe Mettle in the Artiste of the Year category.
Joe Mettle, who won the Artiste of the Year award in 2017, is competing with Kuami Eugene, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale and King Promise but a section of the public believe he does not deserve to be in there.
Moments after the nominees for that category were revealed, a number of people took to social media to speak their mind.
While others thought Medikal and Kwesi Arthur should be in there others also believed Diana Hamilton and KODA did better than Joe Mettle in the year under review.
However, some industry players Showbiz spoke to agreed that the Bo Noo Ni singer deserved to be in the Artiste of the Year category.
For music producer Fred Kyei Mensah, Joe Mettle worked hard in the year under review and has every right to be there.
According to him, Joe Mettle performed at so many places but many people did not know about that and stressed that the My Everything singer lived up to expectation.
Entertainment journalist, Kwame Dadzie, said it would be wrong for anyone to say Joe Mettle does not deserve to be in the Artiste of the Year category.
“For some years now, Gospel musicians have not had a fair representation at the VGMA and if we have Joe Mettle in such a category it means they are being considered,” he stated.
Music producer, Kwesi Ernest said it would have been out of place if Joe Mettle had not been added in the Artiste of the Year category considering the fact that he is the only Gospel musician who won that award two years ago.
According to him, although Joe Mettle was not loud last year compared to the artistes he is competing with, being nominated in the Artiste of the Year category was not out of place.
