The Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori, has assured that incidents of robbery in the country are under control.
He said the police administration has deployed a number of strategies including increased patrol and visibility to check the situation.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, he said all regional police commands have met and have been charged to come up with different strategies to fight crime in their respective jurisdictions.
“We are not sitting down aloof. We are so involved in running the show in those areas,” he said.
There appear to be rising cases of crime in some parts of Accra, including daylight robberies.
Some listeners of the Citi Breakfast Show shared different harrowing robbery experiences in Accra, especially around Adentan.
Some of them recounted incidents of robbers on motorbikes attacking them and making away with their mobile phones and cash.
According to the police, they are conducting special operations within the capital to stem the development.
ACP Kwesi Ofori said, among other things, the police are conducting swoops across the country as a preventive measure to help identify and arrest criminal elements.
“The police administration has come out with new strategies and programmes to make sure that we are in control. There is a general strategy to conduct swoops throughout the country and that is preventive in nature,” he said.
He added that “the enormous action taken by the police should give public confidence and assurance. We are running a very transparent police administration. When we are having limitations and challenges, we make everything clear to you. We are doing everything possible to make sure that we are in control.”
He further stated that the police have seized a number of illegal weapons in the process.
