Black Queens coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo has lavish praise on South’s Banyana Banyana after they ended their winless streak against Ghana in style with a 3-0 victory.

Goals from Hildah Magaia, Thembi Kgatlana and Sibulele Holweni cemented a famous win over Ghana.
Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo in her post match interview complimented the South Africans:

“Oh they are marvelous team. They are a team that has gone to a World Cup and back just recently can never compare to a team that has stayed home.”

She went on to highlight the difference in the fortunes of the two countries in terms of developing women’s football by stating that Ghana had always been better than the South Africans. However, she decided to use the strangest of metaphors by describing Ghana’s dominance over South Africa as follows:

“South Africa used to be our girlfriends. We used to use them anyhow we wanted,” she said.

The triumph at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena was Banyana Banyana’s first win since November 2018 – when they beat the Black Queens in the TotalEnergies Africa Women’s Cup of Nations – and it ended a winless run of six consecutive games in all meetings at the senior level.

Ghana next play Gabriel Zabo’s Cameroon, who lost 1-0 to Morocco, on September 20.

South Africa on the other end, will also look to avenge their 2018 AWCON final loss to the Super Falcons when they meet at the same venue.
