The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr Emmanuel Kofi Nti has been fired, Cedidollar has learnt

Mr Nti and two other commissioners, Isaac Crentsil, commissioner for customs, and Kwasi Asante Gyimah, in charge of domestic tax have been reportedly axed after they consistently failed to meet revenue targets.

A formal statement is yet to be issued but sources say the three GRA heads have been duly notified.

Nti, a Tax Policy Advisor, was appointed into office in February 2017 with a responsibility to generate more revenue for the country by implementing a robust tax compliance regime.

However, he and his team have failed to meet the revenue targets set by the government even though government has largely met its other macro-economic indices.

In the 2019 budget, government set a target of GH¢58.9 billion, which is about 25.9 per cent higher than the GH¢46.8 billion estimated in the 2018 budget in order to meet its ambitious social and development obligations.

But with the first quarter of the year almost over it is not clear yet how much the Authority has raised through taxes but sources say it is still short of what was expected prompting a decision to axe him.

It is not clear yet who has been appointed to takeover at GRA.

With government still bent on achieving its campaign promises including 1 District 1 factory, 1 village 1 Dam and fund the free education it needs to meet its revenue targets in order to be able to implement these capital intensive projects.
