Embattled chair of the National Democratic Congress says the government must focus on arresting the depreciating cedi and leave him alone.
According to Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, he is not a threat to national security and must not be the focus of any government investigations.
“My only advice to government is that if there is anybody to arrest, they should focus on and arrest the depreciating cedi not Ofosu Ampofo,” he told journalists shortly after he reported to the police, Thursday.
Ofosu Ampofo is a subject of police investigation after a controversial tape recording went viral on both traditional and social media.
A voice suspected to be that of Ofosu Ampofo is heard on the tape recording threatening to kidnap people and also charging NDC communications team to verbally assault the chair of the Electoral Commission as well as chair of the Peace Council.
He was charged with four counts including threat of harm, conspiracy to harm and rioting but was bailed with the sum of 400,000 cedis with two sureties.
Mr Ampofo has since declined any comment on the controversial tape recording. He told the police CID, the tape has been “doctored” and would not comment.
His party has meanwhile provided contrasting reactions to the leaked tape. While the Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi insisted that the leaked tape recording was doctored, his deputy said the recording was original and represents the position of the party.
The ex-president and the 2020 flagbearer of the NDC John Mahama has also rationalized the content of the tape claiming Mr Ampofo was only worried about the failure of the peace council chair to condemn violent incidents at the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
When he appeared before the police CID on Thursday, the NDC chair said he is not a violent person and he is focused on returning the NDC to power.
He however charged government to concentrate on developing the country and stabilizing the currency.
He is due to return to the CID on Tuesday.
