Nyantakyi

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi has been charged with fraud and corruption over his involvement in the Number 12 exposé released by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Nyantakyi is also being charged for Conspiracy to commit fraud with the former Northern Regional Representative of the GFA, Abdulai Alhassan.

Both accused persons pleaded not guilty after the case was moved at another court when their pleas were taken.

The court presided over by Justice El-Freda Denkyi adjourned the case to July 23 for a case management conference after Lawyers for the two pleaded for bail for their clients insisting the accused had complied with the court’s orders

Background

Kwesi Nyantakyi and Abdulai Alhassan have been dragged to court following a video documentary released by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas which uncovered supposed rot in Ghana football.

Titled ‘Number 12’, the video documentary exposed bribery and corruption activities on the part of Ghana football officials and referees, a scandal which led to the collapse of the Kwesi Nyantakyi-led GFA administration.

Nyantakyi undoubtedly remains the biggest casualty of the expose as he ultimately lost the GFA presidency, his position as Caf first vice-president and a role as president of the West African sub-regional body Wafu, all in addition to copping a Fifa life ban from all football-related activities.

The former Wa All Stars chief, who was GFA president from 2005, is also facing fraud charges by the Ghana Attorney General.

The video actually exposed Mr Nyantakyi compromising his position by accepting money and the highlights of mass corruption in football in Africa.

FIFA’s adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee later banned him for life from all football-related activities.

He used the name of President Akufo-Addo to peddle influence in the documentary and so the state penciled him for prosecution.
