At least two people have been confirmed dead in renewed clashes between Kokombas and Chokosis in the North East Region.
Another five have been arrested by the police to assist with investigations, ASP Usif Tanko who speaks for the police has confirmed.
He told Joy News “the situation is under some control” but lamented the poor state of roads which he said was hampering efforts by the police to maintain law and order.
Over the weekend, there was an escalation of violence between the Kokomba majority and the minority Chokosis over a piece of land.
The land is question is believed to hold huge ancestral significance for the two ethnic groups with each claiming ownership.
Houses have been burnt, scores left injured with hundreds fleeing the districts of Chereponi into Togo, Saboba, and other neighboring towns, Usif Tanko stated.
“An injured man was taken to a hospital in Togo,” Tanko added.
Humanitarian crisis
There is fear of humanitarian crisis emerging as women and children have been left without homes, food to eat or water to drink.
With their luggage packed on their heads, women and children were seen trekking down a patchy mud road away from the interior regions of Chereponi where the clashes were intense.
A police officer was captured providing water to some of the kids who were flee from the violence.
ASP Usif Tanko was hopeful calm will be restored.
